Toym Imao, Grounded at the Lopez Museum, P/Flight, OFWs
P/Flight
Fiberclass, Acrylic Paint
2012

A life-sized image of a man straining against invisible chains, raring to fly, bent but unbroken. The sculpture is a homage to the plight of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who leave the country to provide better lives for their families. Separation from loved ones and living in foreign countries result in scars that may not be apparent physically, but go deep. The tattoos are actual maps of airports of countries where the Filipino diaspora take flight.
